Summer (June – August)
Summer is the most popular time to visit and for good reason. Expect long, sunny days, warm Gulf waters, and a lively beach atmosphere. Temperatures typically range from the upper 80s to high-90s, but the heat index can make it feel even hotter. Humidity is high, especially in July and August, so staying hydrated and wearing sunscreen is a must. UV levels are also at their peak.
June is also the start of hurricane season, but most summer days are still bright and beautiful. Afternoon showers or quick thunderstorms can pop up, though they usually pass by just as fast as they came.
Fall (September – November)
Fall is one of the Gulf Coast’s best-kept secrets! The summer crowds thin out, but the warm weather sticks around just in time for fun festivals like the Annual Shrimp Festival. Daytime temperatures settle into the 70s and 80s, and humidity begins to drop, making it much more comfortable outdoors. The Gulf water stays warm well into October, so swimming is still very enjoyable.
While hurricane season technically continues through November, the risk decreases as the season progresses. Sunshine is still plentiful, and UV levels begin to ease slightly.
Winter (December – February)
Winter along the Alabama coast is mild compared to much of the country, which is why it attracts snowbirds and those looking to escape colder climates. Temperatures typically range from the low 40s to mid-60s, though occasional cold snaps can dip into the 30s. Snow and ice are extremely rare.
The Gulf water is too cold for most people to swim, but the beaches are peaceful and uncrowded. With lower UV levels and cooler weather, it’s a great time for walking on the beach, golfing, or exploring local attractions.
Spring (March – May): The Sweet Spot
Spring is often considered one of the best times to visit Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The weather is warming up, but it hasn’t reached the intense heat of summer yet. You can expect daytime temperatures in the 60s and mid 70s, with lower humidity and plenty of sunshine. The Gulf water is still cold in the early spring, but warms significantly by May. UV levels begin climbing again, so sun protection becomes important.
